HAPPY EVER LAUGHTER® – THE BATTLE

11 July – 29 July 2018
Capitol Theatre

Dream Academy®’s fourth season of the biggest local live standup comedy event, HAPPY EVER LAUGHTER® takes things to a whole new level with THE BATTLE

12 of Singapore’s best comedians are pit against each other on The Capitol Theatre stage as they pull no punches in a no-holds- barred full-chuckled fight to the rib-tickling end.

They will be trading punchlines. They will be tearing down each other’s cool and calm exteriors. They will be throwing all caution and niceness out of the ring.

Irene Ang, Koh Chieng Mun, Selena Tan, Sebastian Tan a.k.a. Broadway Beng®, Suhaimi Yusof and Kumar will be defending their egos and reputations against Alaric Tay, Judee Tan, Sharul Channa, Fakkah Fuzz, Preetipls and Rishi Budhrani.

Each and every one a household name, each is well-loved by their fans and huge followings who, trail them from show to show, club to club and city to city, THE BATTLE will bring out their natural comedic instincts and call forth their rapier-keen ripostes.

Which team will win the bragging rights to be the true representatives of the best in local comedy?

Nothing will be off-limits – searching for new PM, flooding in MRT, dwindling staff and readers at SPH, increasing GST and retiring in JB. No one and nothing will be spared when these sharp- tongued and quick-witted performers train their critical eyes on what is bothering and bewildering Singaporeans and their foreign friends these days.

So, if you’re looking for laughing aches from belly to brain, grab a ring-side seat, get close to the action and see for yourself who emerges victorious as THE BATTLE unfolds!

Detention Katong

17 Feb – 5 Mar 2017
Esplanade Theatre

A brand new musical comedy written by Selena Tan,  about BAD girls who do GOOD.

Amanda Chin is a straight ‘A’s student, teacher’s pet, and loved by all. One day, she gets herself sent to detention, and has never been happier. She is intent on showing us that good girls are not all good, and that bad girls can do good. Amanda’s mother, Linda, (Serene Chen, Public Enemy) who seems very secretive these days, sparks off this intrigue.

The girls are led by Valerie Choo, Kimberly Chan, Melissa Gan, Natalie Yeap, Sharon Sum, Alyssa Lie, Munah Bagharib, and iNCH Chua.

All this while, the girls are surrounded by a hotchpotch of teachers: The Discipline Mistress of Pain (Neo Swee Lin, Phua Chu Kang’s Ah Ma), a hotshot know-it-all Principal (Darius Tan, Monkey Goes West), the School Counsellor in need of counselling (Sebastian Tan a.k.a Broadway Beng®) and the worldly-wise Malay & PE teacher (Suhaimi Yusof, The Noose).

Lyrics for Detention Katong were written by Selena Tan (Dim Sum Dollies & Sing Dollar), with a team of music composers headed by Elaine Chan (Dim Sum Dollies, Monkey Goes West & Sing Dollar), Sarah Cheng-De Winne (Brand New), Dave Tan (Electrico) and Benjamin Kheng (The Sam Willows).

As sure as the sun rises in the East, Katong is the hippest spot to be spotted in your teenage years. However, these years are also one of the most challenging in life. You go from Dimples to Pimples, Ponytails to Telling Tales, all while trying to be cool, or just pretending to follow the rules.

Come and celebrate a local rite of passage with tears, and with laughter.  Whether you are a teenager, a parent of a teenager, have ever wanted to strangle a teenager, or ever been a teenager… Go to SISTIC now and get your tickets. Don’t be Detained, be Entertained!

The ‘Two is enough’ girls meet the Ribena kids

The Courtesy Lion takes on the Spitting Merlion
The Anson Bye--Bye--elections and the ISA Wave of detentions Great Singapore inventions – CPF, HDB, COE, GST and ERP The Singapore River clean--up and the Mas Selamat mess-up

There’s so much more to our history – just read between the lines!

From the A--Go--Go 1960s to the ‘Stomp’--ing 2000s, the Dollies lay claim to Singapore in their quest for a complete Monop…er… DOLLYPOLY!

HOT OFF THE PRESS! Recipe for Prized National Dish DISAPPEARS! Bibik Lily Lim forced to create a new, all-inclusive National Dish that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, races and religions. SINGAPORE’S most infamous Nonya, Bibik Lily Lim, contacted the authorities late last night when she discovered that the recipe for a prized national dish had gone missing. It is such a heavily-guarded secret that it cannot be named in this report. Not one to cry over spilt belacan, this Bibik is determined that the show must go on. She is currently in an undisclosed location, ‘tombok-ing’ her life away, creating a brand new recipe for you! “Mampus! The recipe was in my family for seven generations! Now my unborn grandchildren will never get to enjoy this sedap dish with their multi-racial friends.”

Also starring… Hossan Leong, Singapore’s funny-man, returns to the Drama Centre with a BRAND NEW episode of his ‘machiam-TV’ talkshow. He will be joined by nutty lunatics Karen Tan (Oi! Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and The Beast), Judee Tan (Broadway Beng®, Beauty World) and Chua Enlai (Sayang Sayang, Vlee Conference), who are absolutely shameless when it comes to making you laugh.

March

Kumar: Stripped Bare and Standing Up (Re-run)

4 – 7 March 2010
Esplanade Theatre

KUMAR: STRIPPED BARE & STANDING UP returns to the Esplanade Theatre BY POPULAR DEMAND! The outrageously funny Kumar sold out his 5-show run at the Esplanade last year before the shows even started and when he finally hit the stage, everyone was squealing with laughter! Uncontrollable madness! After 17 years in the “funny-biz”, Kumar, the undisputed Drag-Queen of local comedy stripped off more than just the skin-tight panty hose and turned his “no-holds-barred” wicked sense of humour onto himself. Nothing is sacred as he shares the hilarious (yet moving) stories of his growing up years with his Dad, how he was discovered in a dress after Boom Boom Room and his many escapades during Basic Military Training. There is nothing basic about this show which incorporates a wonderful “mini-docu” and culminates in Kumar showing off his dancing skills with Singapore’s best known tabla-man, Maniam. It is theatre-magic not to be missed!
